June already, and the longest day approaches – which feels to me as if
we should be having blistering sunshine, complaining about the high
temperatures and having relaxing days out. However, as I write this it's cold and raining – so let’s hope it gets better
for our summer.
We have the St. Peter's Open day and Celebration on Saturday 29th
June, where we will remember 100 years of the current church building and all
that has been done; and we have the All Saints' Summer Barbeque on Sunday 7th
July which is always a lot of fun – so do put these dates in your diary.
Summer is a time of growth and development, as we see nature blooming
and blossoming we wear Green vestments in Church to reflect the season. We are planning to look at some different
topics over the summer, which should help us to grow spiritually and mentally
too.
In June we begin with some reflections on the great parables of Jesus in
Luke’s Gospel, including the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal (or Lost)
Son. These wonderful stories have rich
depths that still make us stop and think today.
In July we are looking at the heart of our worship in Church – the
Eucharist or Holy Communion. It's
something we do every week, and we can take it for granted; so what are we
doing and why are there so many different prayers that we use?
In September we turn our attention to some of the Women of the
Bible. They are often overlooked, but
it's surprising what an important part is played by women in the unfolding
story of God’s salvation and the coming of the Messiah, Jesus.
Finally in October, after our Harvest Festival, we take an apocalyptic
turn and face the challenge of the Revelation of St. John, that most mysterious
book of the Bible. Is it just scary, or
can we find hope and guidance for our lives today in its pages?
I look forward to a Summer of fun and growth together. God bless, Steve
